INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX) announced that it held the Tokyo Bay UMI Project to restore eelgrass beds at the Umi no Koen Park in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama City jointly with Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
Starting this year, INPEX decided to participate in the Tokyo Bay UMI Project, an environmental conservation initiative aimed at restoring and maintaining the rich natural environment of Tokyo Bay. The project aims to sustain biodiversity by restoring eelgrass beds in Tokyo Bay and increase public awareness and understanding of the sea through its activities. Eelgrass seed-planting activities are attended by both representatives of local companies as well as individuals.
On this occasion, activities included mixing sand and mulch with eelgrass seeds that were selected in the summer, packing the seeds into biodegradable, non-woven fabric packages and handing these to authorized divers to lay them on the seabed.
All participants, including small children and adults, listened intently to a lecture on seed-planting by the Seaside Development Research Association, an NPO that runs the event, and enjoyed mixing and packaging the eelgrass seeds. The seeds planted on this occasion are expected to sprout on the sea floor and bloom next spring.
The participants also took commemorative photos with Amamon, the mascot of the Eelgrass Restoration Council that organizes national eelgrass summits, and the children were able to enjoy constructively learning about environmental conservation.
INPEX will continue to actively participate in environmental conservation activities.
