In February 2022, I-RHEX (INPEX Research Hub for Energy Transformation (EX)) became an open hub for the research and development of advanced technologies, such as CCUS and low-cost hydrogen production, and the application of oil and natural gas development technologies to clean energy technologies. At I-RHEX, we promote the development of advanced technologies through collaboration and joint research with a wide range of companies, universities and research institutions in addition to the application of our existing oil development technologies. We also play a role as a network hub for technology development that can contribute to EX more broadly across society, while promoting our own response to EX.

Zero Emission Energy Cycle with Metal Carbonate and Hydride Looping

The transportation of CO2 and H2 is one of the keys to achieve net zero emissions as energy is consumed at different stages of energy production and CO2 sequestration. The proposed concept is to use an alkaline/alkaline earth metal as a two-way carrier of CO2 and H2.

Zero Flare by Methane Pyrolysis

As small quantities of non-condensable gas from oil production pose challenges in terms of feasible utilization, such gas is often incinerated in the flare system with CO2 emissions. The application of methane pyrolysis technology enables the extraction of solid carbon from flare gas and consequently, reduce CO2 emissions by flaring.

Direct Air Capture

As a negative emission technology for net zero emissions, direct air capture (DAC) is efficient and in imminent demand to offset CO2 emissions from minor sources, which cannot be feasibly captured by other conventional methods. By collaborating with technology experts, we are developing a DAC system with high energy efficiency.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The process of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production from waste is under development. In this process, the waste is converted to SAF product via Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis.
